Sex After Childbirth

It will take some time for your vagina to heal after you give birth. However, vaginas are pretty elastic. Women have bodies that are built for the major changes involved both in childbirth and the healing that occurs afterward.

Most vaginas are not irreparably changed after childbirth, but a good way to make sure the muscles of the vaginal walls are strong and ready to heal is to do kegels every day throughout your pregnancy. Kegels are basically exercise for the vagina. To do a kegel, clench up your vaginal walls as though you are trying to stop peeing mid-stream.

If you are wondering how long you should wait after childbirth to have sex, your doctor should be able to give you guidance. An average recommendation is to wait at least six weeks to resume intercourse for both vaginal birth and C-sections. The most important guideline is to wait until your body feels ready and not push yourself.
