Telling Your Parents

Telling your parents about your pregnancy may be what you are dreading the most right now. Though the prospect of a baby may be scary, the feelings of shame or fear you may have at the thought of telling your family are natural. I wish those feelings were not so common for pregnant teens, but they are to be expected. Most of us, while growing up, have heard warning after warning about how sex or pregnancy can ruin our lives. What goes unsaid is that the societal and even parental condemnation of pregnant teens contributes to the difficulty of being a pregnant teen.

Their first reaction, no matter what hurtful things they might say, will primarily be out of fear for your future. It will be a hard conversation, but it will end. Luckily, most parents do get over their initial reaction of shock, anger, or disappointment.
